LITHUANIAN LIBRARY FOR THE BLIND (LAB)

According to the Lithuanian Library Law (1995), LAB was designated among the libraries of state significance.

The main LAB's tasks are: to meet the literary and information demands of Lithuanian blind, visually impaired and other print disabled people; to contribute more actively to the educational, cultural and rehabilitation processes of the blind. In order to meet these tasks, the Lithuanian Library for the Blind forms a universal stock of special literature, consisting of talking books, books in braille and print, periodical publications, music, digital material and tactile books.

The Lithuanian Library for the Blind is also a publishing institution: it produces talking books, periodicals and typhlological material in braille and large print.
Besides the central library in Vilnius, the LAB has 5 branch libraries in other towns of Lithuania (Kaunas, Klaipeda, Panevezys, Siauliai, and Ukmerge).

The total number of LAB's users is 4,245, out of which 2,804 are visually handicapped (as of January 1, 2015). The stock of books and other reading material totals to 475 071 physical units.

The bigger part of the library stock consists of audio books and magazines which can be accessed independently by persons with visual or other disabilities, due to which they are unable to read conventional publications.

Most of the literature is in Lithuanian. Literature in foreign languages is dominated by publications in Russian. There are audio books in Polish, English, German and Belarusian languages.

In Blindness reference department (Tiflotyros skyriuje), personal archives of famous blind are stored. Lithuanian Blindness History Museum collects photographs telling about the work and leisure of the blind, amateur and folk art creations, products made at sheltered enterprises for the blind, tactile books, teaching material, etc. Museum is open to visitors: 9.00 a.m. – 4.00 p.m.
